Dust, history & the Divide

The 1904 Moffat railroad grade climbs from the edge of town to nearly 12,000 feet — and you can drive it, in a guided side-by-side or your own careful SUV. Here's every legal way to get dirty in Grand County.

Start with the fact every visitor gets wrong: Rollins Pass (locally “Corona Pass”) is not a through-route to Boulder. The west side climbs 13.9 spectacular miles from US-40 to the old Corona townsite at the summit — and stops. The east side's Needle's Eye Tunnel has been closed since 1990, whatever the reopening rumors say, and the closure is camera-enforced. Treat it as one of Colorado's great out-and-backs, because it is.

The Continental Divide tour — from the edge of town

Grand Adventures runs the marquee trip from Hideaway Station on US-40 — minutes from the house. You drive your own four-seat Can-Am Maverick behind a guide, 15 miles up the historic Corona Pass road to around 12,000 feet, past the Riflesight Notch trestle. Three departures daily (morning slots dodge the storms), 3–3.5 hours total. The rules: drivers 18+ with a license physically in hand, passengers from age 4, boosters for small kids (bring your own), four people and 1,300 lbs per machine, helmets provided, runs rain or shine. Rent a machine, ride from the lot

• On the Trail Outfitters, Grand Lake (~1 hr) — the best ride-from-the-shop setup: unguided rentals roll straight out of the lot onto roughly 130 miles of Arapaho National Forest trails in the Stillwater Pass / Gravel Mountain country. 2026 rates per machine: 2-seat RZR $299/2hr, $369/4hr, $519/8hr; 4-seaters and 6-seat Rangers a step up. Helmets, a tank of fuel and the trail map included; the shop handles registration and permits — you bring a license and a credit card.
• High Country Tours, Kremmling (~50 min) — guided tours ($265–$345 per machine, drivers 16+) and unguided rentals ($255–$335, drivers 26+ — the fine print that surprises people) on about 120 miles of BLM-permitted trail. Cell coverage out there is Verizon-or-nothing.
• Where to ride: Corona Pass Road itself (open to OHVs from the US-40 entrance to the summit closure), the Stillwater/Gravel Mountain network, and the Church Park forest roads west of Fraser. The legal map is whatever the current Motor Vehicle Use Map shows — download the free COTREX app (trails.colorado.gov) with offline maps before leaving town. Note the Fraser Experimental Forest and the in-town Idlewild trails are non-motorized; don't take a machine there.

Backroads for the car you already have

• Rollins/Corona Pass Road — dry-summer SUVs regularly make the full 13.9 miles to the summit, driven slowly: washboard, rocks, blind curves, one-lane stretches where downhill yields to uphill. Budget 3–4 hours round trip and check the weekly-updated status at preserverollinspass.org first. The lower miles alone, toward the old town of Arrow, are a fine leaf-season hour.
• St. Louis Creek Road (from Fraser) — easy gravel to trailheads; any car in summer.
• Crooked Creek / Church Park (CR 50) — graded gravel over to Hot Sulphur Springs country; AWD-friendly when dry.
• Trough Road to State Bridge — gravel above the Colorado River's Gore Canyon, rafters below, big views; ordinary cars fine in dry weather, slick when wet, no services.
