Winter Park is one of the closest mountain towns to Denver — about 67 miles up I-70 and US-40. Here's how to arrive, and how to get around once you do.
Take I-70 west to US-40 at Empire, then climb over Berthoud Pass and drop into the Fraser Valley — roughly 67 miles and 1.5 to 2 hours. The pass is paved and plowed but steep and winding; allow extra time in snow.
Denver International is about 90 miles and two hours away. Door-to-door shuttle services run between DIA and Winter Park, but a rental car gives you the freedom for day trips to Grand Lake, RMNP and the lakes.
Amtrak's seasonal ski train runs winter weekends from Denver Union Station right to the base of the resort — a scenic, car-free way to arrive and ski straight off the platform. Book early; it sells out.
The free "Lift" shuttle loops through Winter Park and Fraser, and the resort base is about a 3-minute drive. Because Ramble On sits steps from Main Street, you can park the car and walk to dinner most nights.
Berthoud Pass is well-maintained but snowy in winter. AWD or 4WD with good winter tires is ideal, carry chains during storms, check CDOT road conditions before you leave, and top off the tank before heading up. At the house, a heated garage and driveway mean a spot is always ready when you arrive.
